Renewed Hope In Education Reforms; Massive Investment in Kano’s Future | Babajide Fadoju

Education reforms, another pillar closely tied to long term economic inclusion under the Renewed Hope Agenda, were also highlighted during the tour.

The Commissioner for Education, Ali Haruna Abubakar Makoda, said the state has significantly increased investment in education, allocating between 29 and 31 percent of annual budgets to the sector since 2024, rising to over N430 billion in 2026. He said the government has undertaken widespread school renovations, recruited more than 18,000 teachers, and introduced support programmes including free uniforms, instructional materials, and examination sponsorships.

Wherever you step across the 448 wards, not just the 44 local governments, there must be an ongoing strategic project we are undertaking, Makoda said. We have renovated so many schools, including Day Science.

If you were here before, you will understand the impact and value of the work done here.

Makoda added that Kano State has the highest number of public schools in the country, with a basic education enrollment exceeding 4.9 million pupils.

The government has introduced free school uniforms for primary pupils and set aside substantial funds for instructional learning and teaching materials.

The teacher recruitment exercise, which has already brought in more than 18,000 teachers, is still currently ongoing.

On examination sponsorships, Makoda stated that every year, the state sponsors candidates for NECO, JAMB, WAEC, and other enrolments. In 2026 alone, we set aside N4.4 billion to sponsor more than 183,000 students.

He added that efforts are also underway to address the challenge of out of school children, an issue of national concern, through data driven planning and the integration of Qur’anic and formal education systems.

This comprehensive approach to education reform is made possible via increase in FAAC allocations that accrued from oil subsidy removal on the orders of the president.
