CP Tunji Disu highlights ongoing efforts to combat robbery syndicates
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, led by Commissioner of Police Tunji Disu, has intensified its crackdown on “one-chance” robbery syndicates, parading seven suspects and seizing 13 tinted vehicles linked to criminal activities. The operation is part of a sustained effort to curb crime as the holiday season approaches, a period historically associated with increased criminal activities.
During a press briefing, CP Disu emphasized the FCT Command’s commitment to combating these crimes through robust intelligence gathering, tactical operations, and public cooperation. “We will not relent in our efforts to ensure that Abuja remains a safe place for everyone. These operations are just the beginning,” he said.
The police highlighted significant arrests, including three members of a syndicate operating in the Mararaba area, on the outskirts of Abuja. The suspects, identified as Abba Godwin, Abraham Anthony, and Moses Obi, were arrested after extensive surveillance. Godwin admitted to earning between N20,000 and N40,000 daily from the gang’s operations. The police are actively pursuing the gang leader, “Friday Ogwuche,” believed to be leading a larger network across multiple states.
In a separate operation, three additional suspects—Moses Steven, Jude Simon, and Terfa Akaaer—were arrested. The trio had been using deceptive tactics, such as filling vehicles with accomplices while leaving one seat open to lure unsuspecting passengers.
The most high-profile arrest involved Hyacinth Avetse, a key figure in a major “one-chance” syndicate. Apprehended at the Area 1 Roundabout, Avetse allegedly earned over N1.4 million through his criminal activities. During his arrest, the police recovered a Green Lexus Saloon Car, a Blue Toyota Corolla, and electronic devices, including POS machines, laptops, and phones.
In total, the FCT Police Command recovered 13 vehicles, seven suspects, three POS machines, five laptops, phones, over $200 in cash, and tools such as memory cards, blindfolds, and pliers used in robberies.
CP Disu commended the public for their cooperation and urged continued vigilance. “The success of these operations is due in large part to the active collaboration of the community,” he said. He assured residents that tactical operations would be sustained throughout the holiday season to ensure public safety.
“We remain resolute in our mission to rid the city of criminal elements and make the FCT a safer place for all,” CP Disu concluded.
