The Jagaban of Borgu. | Steve Aborisade

Some people are wondering why Tinubu is getting the endorsements he is getting. They are busy attacking the support base that the Jagaban is recruiting. The fact is that the man, as of now, is the only presidential aspirant that seems serious about being president. He is backing his ambition with the leg work. He has not taken anything for granted. Despite the influence he has in his party, he kept working on members to seek acceptance and support. He has been long touted to be strategic and, he is showing us how. I won’t be surprised if he becomes our next president. One thing we shouldn’t forget is that politics is not morality. The best usually is not who gets it. The one who gets it could be that person who wants it the most and, has put in the most effort. As it is now, who can deny that Asiwaju seems to want it the most? I was in Kogi days ago, and on the long stretch of road from Abuja to Kabba, it was only Asiwaju, of all the known presidential hopefuls that has a presence beyond the state capital. Only the governor of the state has his intent advertised in the capital city of Lokoja. That instantly tells me something. So irrespective of how you feel about this man, it will be difficult to deny that his train is on autopilot. Except other candidates hits the road now, it may be impossible work to match the grounds the Jagaban had already covered. It is going to get more interesting from now on and, I can’t wait to see how the plot plays out. Will Asiwaju live true to his name, Jagaban – ‘leader of warriors’ – in the Nigerian political space? Time will definitely tell.
