NSITF Broadens Focus on Informal Sector to Deepen Social Safety Net Coverage

Seun Faleye Calls for Inclusive Coverage on Labour Lens

The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has reaffirmed its commitment to integrating the informal sector into its Employee Compensation Scheme (ECS). Appearing on Labour Lens, a TVC production, NSITF Managing Director Seun Faleye stressed the need to extend the scheme’s benefits to artisans, market traders, and other informal sector workers.

“The informal sector is the backbone of our economy,” Faleyesaid during the interview. “If we can cover this sector effectively, we will not only safeguard livelihoods but also boost national productivity.”

To this end, NSITF has embarked on an extensive sensitization campaign across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones. Regional meetings have been held to educate informal sector players about the ECS’s benefits, such as medical reimbursements, disability compensation, and educational support for dependents of deceased workers.

Faleye acknowledged the unique challenges of engaging this sector but emphasized NSITF’s tailored approach. “We are developing strategies that consider their peculiarities while ensuring the process remains simple and accessible,” he explained.

With this initiative, NSITF is setting the stage for a more inclusive and equitable workforce, making the benefits of its compensation scheme accessible to all Nigerians, regardless of their employment status.
