OLD IMAGE PROPAGANDA EXPOSED: 2020 BORNO IED ATTACK FALSELY RECYCLED TO MISLEAD PUBLIC

The Borno Movement for Security and Stability (BMSS) has noted with grave concern the circulation of an old image falsely portrayed as evidence of a recent attack allegedly occurring in March 2026. The Movement unequivocally condemns this deliberate act of disinformation designed to mislead the public and create unnecessary alarm.

In a statement issued in Maiduguri on Tuesday morning, the Coordinator of BMSS, Mallam Kashim Bukar, clarified that the image in question originates from the 7 July 2020 improvised explosive device (IED) attack in Borno State, North-East Nigeria, during which nine gallant soldiers paid the supreme price in the line of duty. The tragic incident was widely reported at the time, and the casualty figures were officially confirmed by security authorities.

Mallam Bukar stressed that contrary to the false claims currently circulating on social media, the verified death toll from the 2020 incident does not support the fabricated figure of “50 soldiers,” nor was any Major General reported killed. The recycling of this four-year-old image alongside grossly inflated casualty claims represents a calculated attempt to distort public perception, incite panic, and undermine confidence in ongoing security efforts.

The reuse of outdated visuals and the exaggeration of casualty figures are classic propaganda tactics intended to manufacture outrage and destabilize public trust.

BMSS therefore urges members of the public to disregard the misleading narrative and rely solely on credible, verified sources for information on security matters. The Movement also calls on the Federal Government to take firm action against individuals and groups responsible for the deliberate spread of falsehood and disinformation.

The Movement commends the troops of Operation Hadin Kai for their continued sacrifices and unwavering commitment to restoring peace, security, and stability across the North-East region.

Signed:
Mallam Kashim Bukar
Coordinator, Borno Movement for Security and Stability (BMSS)
